Rooted in medieval Japanese tradition the Tsuba is a essential component of the Samurai Sword. It is the guard that separates the handle from the blade and protects the hand of the warrior during combat.
Like all things traditionally Japanese, Tsuba manufacture was cultivated and perfected to the highest degree. Essentially becoming an Artform. Today ancient Tsuba are prized by collectors almost as much as the fine Samurai swords that bore.
During my own research on Tsuba, I was delighted to find many of the most beautiful had designs reminiscent of the Verve symbol I created for my brand almost forty years ago!
Starting with one of my favorite Tsuba designs, I had a Japanese American artist cut an actual woodblock of it and make an original print. This print served as the basis from which the graphic of these T-shirts was ultimately created.
